Microsoft Free Office Web suite to come with MS-Office 2010

Yes Microsoft have to provides Free Office Web suite to come with MS-Office 2010. In the age of the Internet, it’s difficult to keep things under wraps till you launch a product. Microsoft’s announcement of Office 2010 is still a few hours away, but since its page went up a while ago, Google already cached it!
The biggest news out of the launch is, without doubt, the introduction of the Office Web suite of applications, which will be taking on Google Docs. Microsoft has finally realized the value of ‘free’ as Word, Excel and PowerPoint will have free-to-use online versions, accessible via your Windows Live account.

Based on that cached page and TechCrunch’s guide, here are some of the salient features of Office 2010:

1. Office Web 2010:
a) Word, Excel and PowerPoint will look the same as they do in their desktop versions, complete with the popular ‘ribbon’ interface from Office 2007.
b) You can directly publish documents from your desktop Office suite to the online Office Web suite, and work on it in any browser. Almost all browsers are supported, as MS is working out the chinks in running the suite on Google Chrome.
2. Word 2010:
a) Multiple users can work on the same file at the same time. Details of how this will happen haven’t been released, but MS has said that as you make changes, the program will alert the other users to update the document for the same. The collaboration, however, will not be available in the Web version.
b) Copy-paste functionalities have received a boost, and Word 2010 will also be able to handle taking screenshots and embedding them into the document.
3. Excel 2010:
a) A new feature called Sparklines gives a visual snapshot image of a data trend over time within a cell.
4. PowerPoint 2010:
a) Video and image editing will be integrated into PowerPoint, with the former option being akin to Apple’s iMovie, while image-editing is like a stripped-down version of Photoshop.
5. Outlook 2010:
a) The ‘ribbon’ interface has been included into all Office 2010 Apps, including Outlook.
b) The inbox layout has also changed, with a new message-tree-like appearance.
c) The ‘Ignore conversation’ feature will allow users to remove themselves from irrelevant email strings.

A free, online version of MS-Office will undoubtedly have a lot of people trusting the cloud more, because no matter what Google Docs has to offer, MS-Office is still MS-Office! Without doubt, there is lots more to come from the Redmond-based software giant when it makes its official announcement. And we will keep you updated as more news breaks…

Google Chrome OS for PCs-First Possible Screenshots

Yes! You heard that right. Google already dominates the web, but take heed, the netbook is next.

In Google's next step to not "be evil" they have unveiled their plans for a light and open-source operating system based on Linux, called the Google Chrome Operating System, which they call "a natural extension of Google Chrome."

Gone are the days when you'd call the browser a "natural extension" of the operating system, Google is planning to take it the other way around, the Google Chrome OS will be built around Google Chrome: running on the Linux kernel and a new windowing system.

What they intend is to have the entire functionality you expect form an operating system straight from the browser! The web will be the entirety of the platform, and developers can create applications which can run on the browser itself, while the UI stays out of the way. What they tout is that all these applications will also run on any browser on anyone's PC, making it a very attractive platform, since anyone whether or not they are running Google Chrome OS will be able to use them.

Google intends to have Netbooks out in the second half of next year (2010) which will be running the Google Chrome OS, and have already tied up with OEM to enable that. Their OS will run on both x86 and ARM platforms but is not to be confused with Android, which is their solution for smartphones and other similar low power devices such as set-top boxes.

Google intends for this to be target to netbooks initially with presumably higher-powered devices next. There had already been much speculation about bringing Android to Netbooks, which form a kind of mid-way point between the arena that Android targets and conventional full-featured OSs.

The philosophy that they espouse in the creation of this OS is, that with computers developed before internet, the very structure of an OS need to be rethought, and who else better to rethink things than Google itself... In this rethinking process they have come up with the Google Chrome OS, to take you from a black screen to working on Internet applications in a few seconds.

Welcome to the Google future, where you run a Google OS to search on Google, to communicate using Google Wave, to work on Google Docs, and to run your business using Google Apps.

First possible screenshots of Google Chrome OS leak! [Rumour]

Here are what could be the first four, very hazy, screenshots of the upcoming Google Chrome OS (GCOS), along with some pretty detailed descriptions of the operating system.

The anonymous uploader was apparently invited by Acer to view a demonstration of the GCOS by a Google representative. How much faith should we put in his claims, and are these just modified screenshots of a stripped-down gOS or some other Linux distro? It matters not, for we are too intrigued!

The uploader, who watched the entire demonstration on an Acer Extensa 4620Z laptop, was quite impressed and noted a few features:

The entire installation of the GCOS on a machine running Windows Vista took just 10 minutes.
Reboot from desktop to desktop took just 25 seconds.
There’s a dock-like bar at the bottom, dubbed the ‘Chrome Bar’, which has a little blue orb – much like the orb at the centre of the Chrome icon. Clicking on it opens up a program folder, similar to the Start menu in Windows.
The Chrome Bar could eventually be made to autohide and pop-up with a special hardware button or panel, much like the little bar that comes on the Palm Pre.
A clock sits in the bar, which seems to double up as an indicator for Internet connections.
The Chrome Bar could eventually be integrated with the status bar, or could have a search bar built into it.
Two navigation modes – ‘exploration’ and ‘browser’. ‘Exploration’ lets you navigate through the local hard disk using a Explorer-like interface. ‘Browser’ brings up Google Chrome for your online needs.

Most of what the anonymous uploader described seemed like common sense and nothing out of the ordinary, let alone a ‘Wow’ factor. Our trust waivers, but who are we to go up against the might of the InterWebs?

Speed Test: Firefox 3.5 performs at 251% the speed of 3.0

That's the thing about speed test profiling: We can see where things change and where they don't.
As a result, Firefox 3.5 posted a 9.93 in our performance index on Windows XP SP3. What that means is, this latest browser generally performs nearly ten times better on XP than Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (the previous version, not IE8) on Vista SP2, which is about the slowest browser you can run (and therefore the one we chose for our index).

Similar gains in the same departments were recorded for Vista and for Windows 7 RC. Vista still slows down the browser (any browser) noticeably, making it post a 7.61 index score. While Windows 7 is still a slower platform than XP, it's not nearly the bear that Vista has been: Firefox 3.5 scores a 9.24 in Win7 RC. In terms of speed alone, the new Firefox runs 29% faster in Win7 RC than Vista SP2, and 41% faster in XP SP3 than Vista SP2.

On average (taking into account some new and welcome speed gains in the latest Opera 10 Beta), Web browsers run 20% faster in Windows 7 RC than in Vista SP2. Comparing the new Firefox to the one folks were running just last week, by Betanews estimates, version 3.5 runs at 253.8% the speed of version 3.0.11 in Windows XP SP3, 246.5% the older version's speed in Vista SP2, and 254.6% the speed in Windows 7 RC. That averages out to about 251% the older version's performance across the board.

Yesterday's release of Firefox 3.5 means that the "Shiretoko" development track, which Mozilla reserves for whatever "the next version" may be, is now devoted to whatever improvements are to be incorporated in the first bug fix release, to be called version 3.5.1. There's no release date or even a forecast for this, because there just aren't that many bugs yet. But we are seeing minor performance improvements in the Shiretoko track over 3.5, including a 9.34 index score for Win7.

It also means the "Minefield" development track for 3.6 Alpha 1 undergoes some changes as well, the early results of which indicate that some temporary fixes were made to the JavaScript engine. Performance of the 3.6 Alpha daily build plummeted sharply on all three platforms (with Vista down to 6.48), though this may not be a suggestion that the 3.6 browser will necessarily be slower. Rather, developers may be reverting to older code in the interim, in order to make complete builds for now.

Download Latest Mozilla Firefox 3.5 Final

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. – June 30, 2009 – Mozilla, a public-benefit organization dedicated to promoting choice and innovation on the Internet, today released Firefox® 3.5 Final, a major update to its popular, free and open source Web browser. Coming one year after the launch of the critically acclaimed Firefox 3, Firefox 3.5 introduces cutting-edge features, as well as new support for a wide variety of Web standards.

Firefox 3.5 is the best performing browser Mozilla has ever released and delivers radically improved JavaScript performance, a new Private Browsing mode, native support for open video and audio, and Location Aware Browsing. The newest version of Firefox is more than two times faster than Firefox 3 and ten times faster than Firefox 2 on complex websites. With extensive under-the-hood work to support new technologies, Firefox 3.5 is the most powerful and complete modern browser and helps upgrade the Web experience.

Firefox 3.5 was built through Mozilla’s global, open source development process. The Mozilla community comprises thousands of passionate contributors, including experienced developers, security experts, localization and support communities in more than 60 countries, and tens of thousands of active testers. With more than 300 million active users, Firefox is the only popular Web browser created by a non-profit organization.

“So much is happening on the Web right now, it’s a great time for browsers. Firefox 3.5 brings together the most innovative Web technologies and delivers them in the most complete and powerful modern browser,” said John Lilly, CEO, Mozilla.

What’s New in Firefox 3.5:

Firefox 3.5 makes surfing the Web easier and more enjoyable with exciting new features and platform updates that allow Web developers to create the next generation of Web content. Native support for open video and audio, private browsing, and support for the newest Web technologies will enable richer, more interactive online experiences.

Performance: Firefox 3.5 includes the powerful new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, which delivers unprecedented performance with today’s complex Web applications. Firefox 3.5 is more than two times faster than Firefox 3 and ten times faster than Firefox 2.

Open Video and Audio: Enjoy video and audio content from within your browser, without the need for plugins. Video is a vital part of the modern Web, whether it’s used to communicate, educate, or entertain. Firefox 3.5 delivers the first native integration of audio and video directly into the browser. Now everyone can easily watch open format Ogg Theora videos.

Web developers can use these technologies to design pages that interact with video content in new and exciting ways, offering richer interactive experiences beyond controlling playback and volume.

Privacy Controls: Firefox 3.5 includes features designed to protect your privacy online and provide greater control over your personal data.

While using the new Private Browsing mode in Firefox 3.5, nothing you encounter on the Web will be stored from that moment on during your browsing session. Unique to Firefox 3.5, the new Forget this Site feature can remove every trace of a site from your browser. If you want to remove all private data or activity from the past few hours, Clear Recent History, another Firefox-only feature, gives you full control over what stays and what goes.

Location Aware Browsing: Location Aware Browsing saves you time by allowing websites to ask you where you are located. If you choose to share your location with a website, it can use that information to find nearby points of interest and return additional, useful data like maps of your area. It’s all optional – Firefox doesn’t share your location without your permission.
